Textbooks

Textbooks are an important part of learning English. PIA students will need to purchase a textbook for each class they are enrolled in. Students should plan to have their books by the first week of class. This page has some useful information about purchasing textbooks.

Purchasing Textbooks

Students may purchase textbooks at the bookstore on University of Portland’s campus. A list of textbooks for each class will be emailed to students before the start of each term.

FAQs

  • What textbooks are used at PIA?
    • Check your email to find the textbook list for your classes each term.
  • When do I need to buy my textbooks?
    • You need to buy your textbooks by the first week of class. You must have your textbook by the second class meeting at the latest.
  • How can I get my textbooks?
    • Students can purchase textbooks on-campus at the bookstore. Students are also allowed to buy your textbooks from another source.
  • Can I use e-textbooks?
    • PIA allows e-textbooks only for students in online courses. Students taking in-person classes must have paper books.
  • Can I buy used textbooks?
    • PIA discourages students from buying used textbooks. ESOL textbooks have a lot of written exercises, so used textbooks are often already marked. Your textbook needs to be clean each term so you can do the exercises yourself. If you buy a used textbook, you must erase all of the markings before using it in class.
